So it wasn't THAT rainy. Oh well.
I don't do sentimental junk well at all so I'll just say that nothing sucks worse than being flat-out broke and my mom's the best mom ever. And if it weren't for her I'd have been totally screwed a long time ago. So there.
I'm working on a number of games right now. I'm done playing Lost Kingdoms 2 so that's going back to Gamestop tomorrow and I'll probably check out Wing Commander Prophecy for GBA. This frees up the Gamecube for more Ocarina of Time. Still making progress on Anachronox although I've stopped playing Half-Life. We'll see how long Anachronox lasts. I've also been feeling that urge to play Final Fantasy again, specifically 7 and 8.
In D&D news, I'm still working on my Thursday night game's website. I got the layout all done but it only looks good in Mozilla, it looks okay in IE (except the seams are super-visible), and I don't even want to think about how it looks in Opera, the preferred browser of my DM. But I'm working on it! The hard part's done, now it's just sticking in all the Movable Type tags. I'm also preparing for Tuesday, my first game as DM. I'm definitely looking forward to that, I just need to make a trip to Kinko's to print out some character sheets and pick up a couple supplies.
It's nice to get some shit done and shake off that feeling of sitting on my ass all summer.
So last night I checked out Lost Kingdoms 2 for Gamecube from work. It's a game where you run around and throw cards at monsters which will either produce a monster of your own or just attack the monster yourself. And it has just passed the 10 minute test. It's pretty fun. I sure hope there's a storyline though because the first 2 sections of the game haven't had any point to them at all.
Hey! It's 8am and I'm wide awake! I passed out on Katie last night around 11. I guess I was more tired than I thought. This is good though, I can get some shit done today instead of sleeping until 4.
Holy god where have I been? Sitting here. Almost all weekend too.
I just finished reading Crisis on Infinite Earths for the second time. What a goddamn great story. I can't describe why I like it so much but it's clearly one of the best stories I've ever read.
And I'm playing Half-Life still. I think I'm almost to the point where I gave up three years ago last time I tried to play through the whole game. But hey! whenever I need a reminder of why I'm playing this again, I've always got Red Faction here screaming "I'm fucking terrible rip-off of Half-Life and you finished me!" Ah, finally, a good use for Red Faction. To make one appreciate the finer things in life. Or Half-Life.
So last night I was so desperate for a semi-recent FPS that I reinstalled Red Faction. Yeah. And then I played it for a half hour and promptly deleted it because that game sucks. And then I found my copy of Battlecruiser 3000AD and the thought to install and play that crossed my mind so I cried.
I might install that later and play it (or try to play it) but I settled on Half-Life. I managed to finagle it into working and I've never beaten it. Though Red Faction is a blatant ripoff of Half-Life, Half-Life isn't a terrible game. I actually think I'm enjoying it more now than I ever did. It's aging but the everything is still pretty solid in it. The sounds are good (Red Faction fucked this up HORRIBLY), the graphics are decent (for being a 5 year old game), and the gameplay doesn't suck. And now I'm downloading a multitude of mods because everyone owns Half-Life and so finding games is no problem.
So I'm channel surfing and guess what's on MTV2: motherfucking Headbangers Ball! Nothing but cheesy metal videos! And this isn't those hair-metal or power-ballad metal videos (because those are even worse), these are metal bands trying seriously to make a video! And they're SOOO cheesy! But Rob Zombie is hosting it and I can at LEAST tolerate everything they've played so far. And I think this is the loudest I've ever turned up my tv!
Oh what a day. So nothing really happened until around 2pm when I went to LLCC to drop a copy of a preliminary flyer for my Summer D&D game off at the games club advisor but he was out and the office was locked so I had to kick it under his door.
Then I came home, went nuts, and cleaned. I cleaned up my office/den/etc and the little hallway that the carpenter will be working on this weekend. Then I picked up Katie and we moved a small bookcase in here so I could store some of my books off of the floor. Then I went to D&D.
D&D kicked ass. It kicked ass if only because my character was bitten by a werewolf and failed his fortitude save against lycanthropy. From my character's standpoint, this could be the best thing to ever happen to him. He's a druid so he's already really attuned to nature and once he discovers he's a lycanthrope, if he can control it, he can be even more at one with the earth. But until he can control it, it has the side effect of turning my character into one of the most dangerous in the party. Unattended, a full moon can mean one of them might wake up to me chewing on their throat or ripping off their face. But hey! we already have one cursed party member who goes into involuntary rages and his are even less predictable than the cycles of the moon so dealing with a lycanthrope should be no problem. This will take some discussion with my DM but I really don't see any reason why my character would go seeking a cure for this. Ever.
And then I come home and the kitchen is clean and Katie moved some stuff around in my office/den/etc. (to a positive effect) and the bedroom is almost clean too! She's tired as hell but my girlfriend is the best girlfriend ever. No really, she is! I'll get her a plaque some day for it too.
And since I'm in such a giving mood, a gift! Live - Lakini's Juice (4.56MB) Live just played this on a SNL re-run and this is a great song so I dug it up. Technically, this is one of the most perfect recordings I've ever heard. Even in mp3 form, the opening is absolutely perfect. The vocals, the guitar, the bass, the drums, and the strings are all in perfect balance. No one element overshadows the others and makes the whole song come together. So give it a listen because it's technology and music at its finest!
I know I shouldn't bother trying to write an entry when I can't even come up with a stupid title.
But I did come up with a new game. It's called "insomniacat", where I wake the cat up every time I find her sleeping. Like she has the habit of doing to me. Wake up, cat! You can sleep when I can!
When smacked enough times with a hammer! Or so I learned from playing Hexen 2. Yes, I decided on Hexen 2. A classic in it's own rights. Heretic 2 is up next too, that was a damn fine game.
I beat Resident Evil Zero. The ending was decent, very Resident Evil. And the whole game foreshadowed the rest of the series (even Code Veronica a little but not RE 3, the one no one seems to have played but Katie and I) which is funny since it's the latest one.
Comedy Central is showing old episodes of The Ben Stiller Show. I'll be up till 3.
THE CLONE: So last night Matt and I discussed what would happen if we ever ran into our clones. Last week we ran into Scott and Stinky's clones and it was damn terrifying. The only choice of action I could take if I ran into my clone would be to kill it right then and there.
Think about it. It's your clone. It knows everything you do. It's thinking the same thing you are. You're never one step ahead of it because it's always right there, right beside you. You are it and it is you. And my clone will try to kill me too because it knows I'm trying to kill it. It'll be a full on, balls to the wall, battle to the death. One of us will be ripped apart in the struggle and the other's going home in a bodybag.
And once you've killed your clone (assuming you survive), no one can touch you. You killed your worst enemy; yourself. That's the boss fight of your life. One life, no more quarters, no reset button. You better grab the powerup and kick it's ass because you're on the last level and it's either get out alive or game over man.
Being out of school and somewhat employed, I get a lot of time alone. And this weekend it meant I got to do a lot of thinking.
I drove alone Saturday night. I went out to Barnes & Noble, just as a destination to get me out of the house. Across to Woodside Road, up to Lincoln Land because I haven't seen the place at night. Back around and up Stevenson to Dirksen for a ride to the other side of town. Dirksen to Clear Lake to Milton to North Grand, back to home. I was out for about an hour and a half.
I won't go into what I was thinking about because I don't think talking about it will help. It was more or less about why I am here. I just thought it was a strange thing to be thinking about alone and I'm doing a shitty job of putting it into words.
I'm stuck at the point where I don't know what game I want to play. I have so much time on my hands that I want to play them all but then I'd never beat any of them. I'm leaning towards MAYBE reinstalling Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption but the game doesn't REALLY get fun until you're fighting the Teutonic knights and then it gets really good when you're in modern times and those are both at least halfway into the game and I'm not sure I've got the patience for that. The new Vampire game, Bloodlines, looks awesome though so it's got me wanting to play Redemption again just for the modern times half.
I found an mp3 of one of my favorite songs from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Castlevania - Dance of Pales. It's a nice orchestral piece. There's not a lot of music from this game that I don't like but this is a particularly good one.
Some fun facts based on my site stats:
- More people come to this site at 11pm than any other hour. In second place is 12am, and in third is 5pm. (all CST)
- My top referrer is someone I don't even know. A big fan obviously has a serious routine when viewing webpages. Also, my top referrer is no longer valid. The 2nd highest referrer is Google, with Yahoo in 3rd place.
- Top 10 search terms that bring people here (in order of most requested): hellsing, pictures, of, download, harmony, rom, dissonance, a, i, castlevania, dream
- Top 3 browsers: IE 6.x, IE 5.x, Mozilla 1.x
- Top 3 OS's: Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows 98
- Someone still uses Windows 3.1 AND has visited this site!
Aren't statistics fun!? In other news, my wisdom tooth is still trying to kill me but the painkillers make that a difficult task at best. I'm pretty sure I'm near the end of Resident Evil: Zero. Maybe after this I'll finish off Eternal Darkness or even start playing the Resident Evil remake again! Shane let us borrow Def Jam Vendetta and Katie's beaten it already. I'll have to do the same before the next game night so we can all have a full selection of rappers and I can be DMX! And hopefully at some point Shane will get the time and privacy to watch Toxie 4 because that movie is bad ass!
Oh and Alkaline Trio's new CD "Good Mourning" snuck up on me and now it's out. It's good, not as good as their previous CDs but it's growing on me! Also, doesn't "snuck" sound like a dirty word? Like defrocking.
GOING LIMP: It was going to be "Feeling Goth" but "Going Limp" is funnier. I'm going to give Alkaline Trio's "Good Mourning" an 8/10. It's a solid CD, like all previous Alkaline Trio CDs. It's even deeper into the self-destruction (but not suicide) and going-straight-to-hell theme than "From Here to Infirmary".
You know, when I'm in the mood for just pure action, Serious Sam is fucking great. Any other time it's pretty mediocre and sometimes boring but tonight I was in the mood to shoot shit and good old Sam delivers over and over. And now I'll return to shooting shit and listening to Alkaline Trio at "Katie will kill me for this" volumes.
SHMUPS: Lately I've been playing a lot of obscure foreign veritcal shooters like Warning Forever and Shooters Solitude and more recently Radio Zonde but I think I've found a winner. rRootage (4.14MB). It's totally in english and even has an english readme file. 4 different game modes, 9 stages, 5 levels per stage. That's 180 different levels. Okay, they're not totally different because they're all boss fights and the bosses are vague shapes that spew balls of energy at you and ramp up in difficulty as you approach level 9R-5 but what makes rRootage great is the different game modes.
Normal is just straight forward, kill the boss, win the level gameplay. Psy is where you get the standard laser but when you graze the enemy bullets, it builds up a meter that turns you invincible when it fills up and makes for a really dangerous kind of game. GW mode is where you get the standard laser and a meter that fills over time. Once it's full, you can activate a field around your ship that reflects the enemies shots back at it. It really makes you work on your timing of when to use the reflector and when to dance around the bullets. And my favorite mode is IKA. IKA is based on the game Ikaruga for dreamcast/gamecube. The enemies shots are all either red or blue. Your ship is surrounded by a field that can be either red or blue. When you run into shots in the same color as your field, they're reflected back to the enemy. Opposing colored shots kill you. So to get the best score, you've got to dance through the enemy fire, switching colors back and forth to get as many of their shots sent back at them. I've gotten up to 3R-4 and it's pretty insane. There's so many shots flying that for the first time a vertical shooter has caused my computer to slowdown.
But the game is bad ass no matter what mode you like best and totally free so download it and share it! I'm going back to see if I can reach 4A before I pass out.
Okay so I have a wisdom tooth cutting through and it's hurting like a motherfucker. The whole right side of my jaw is swollen and it sucks. So if someone could please just shoot me right now, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!
IT'S OFFICIAL; LIFE SUCKS So not only is my wisdom tooth cutting through and it's been determined that I need to get all 4 ripped out soon but I also have some bacterial infection on the one that's coming in now. And my cheek is all swollen up so I look like I've been punched minus the bruise. So the dentist prescribed some painkillers and some anti-biotics and referred me to an oral surgeon. Eels' "The Medication is Wearing Off" has a far more applicable meaning now!
On the plus side Resident Evil Zero is fun as hell because zombies you kill STAY DEAD. That was my biggest gripe with the Resident Evil remake, zombies would come back if you didn't burn the body or shoot off their head. And what was worse was that you could only carry so much gasoline with you so you could only burn so many bodies before you needed to get back to the gas can. Another thing that makes RE:0 superior is that for the first time in the series, you can put down items! If you're carrying six ink ribbons and you find Ultimate Weapon A, you can actually put them all down to make room for the gun! No more stupid boxes, just drop what you don't want to carry!
And since I've been awake since 6am, I'm dead fucking tired so I'm going to pass out. Here's hoping my tooth isn't killing me tomorrow!
