Dreamcast
So I "acquired" through probably illegal channels an image of Half-Life for Dreamcast. The game was made to completion (hence, the CD image floating around) and never released. I remember back in the Babbage's days, we even had a strategy guide for the game. But it was the end of the Dreamcast and I guess the publisher's didn't want to try to recoup expenses on a system that Sega basically abandoned overnight.
In reality, if Half-Life had been released for Dreamcast, it probably would've been rather successful. It's a damn near picture-perfect port of the PC version, even updating several models to improve their polycounts. My only gripes with it are the load times (which are frequent in Half-Life but hardly noticable in the PC version) and the lack of multiplayer. I mean come on, the dreamcast has four controller ports FOR A REASON, and Quake 3 had splitscreen multiplayer. But then multiplayer might've been one of those features never finished before the game was dropped, though I doubt it was in the design in the first place because there's no indication of it in the game and the game is rather complete.
And then I tried out Rez for dreamcast, which is EXACTLY the same as Rez for PS2. Maybe even a little more difficult but the graphics and sounds are all exactly the same, which speaks poorly of the PS2 version.
It really is terrible that the dreamcast died before it's time because it had some fantastic games on it. Some were ports and nearly all the good ones that were once exclusives have found themselves ported to the newer systems, thankfully, but I won't forget that they were on dreamcast first. Then again, for every Half-Life or Shenmue or Soul Calibur, there were three shitty games that were produced in much higher numbers. Maybe it was the fact that the dreamcast came out well before the PS2 that it attracted new technology bandwagonners who jumped ship from the playstation to make tech demos and other mindless, boring crap for the "new" system. Oh well.
Now to find a copy of Soldier of Fortune and Unreal Tournament to round out my dreamcast FPS collection.
