Dream of Waking Ne Cede Malis

I don’t ever update this thing

Believe it or not, being a computer guy in Iraq isn't exciting at all. I spend most of my time milling around the base fixing various end-user problems. I'm getting quite better at setting up satellite dishes as most internet connections, to include the one I'm on right now that runs right into my room, come from a satellite ISP. The unit that just left this place left a lot of the systems behind because they have no use in the states so the trick is to put the pieces back together after they're (inevitably) moved from their safe and functional positions. And sometimes you'll get the connection locked in but the account tied to the modem hasn't been paid for so you have to swap modems around to find one that works. Anyway. If anything when I come home I'll have the next-to useless skill of being able to setup a satellite dish.

Let's see, it's January so I'm in my fourth month of being deployed. It still sucks. I mean, yes I'm in a relatively comfortable living space, yes I'm eating daily, yes I can find a porcelein toilet to crap in and the shower usually has water pressure and hot water, but I miss Katie every day. I've decided too, this deployment thing is for suckers and I'm probably going to get out of the military once my six years are up (in 2010). Hopefully I can dodge another deployment when I get back until then but I'm tired of missing Katie all the time. I didn't even get to spend a full year with her once I was out of training before I got deployed. Katie and I have already started discussing that not-so-near future so this is no big revelation to her. I just thought I'd let everyone else know.

In other news, Slashdot has begun linking Livejournals in their news articles as official sources. The apocalypse to follow in the next 7 - 10 days.
