Missing Persons
There is something that has always creeped me out about missing people. I used to watch Unsolved Mysteries when I was a kid and that show always had a missing persons story and those were the worst. It’d be like someone was going about their day to day job and all of a sudden disappear. No signs of struggle, no notes, nothing out of place. Just one missing person. Where do these people go?
Another thing that creeps me out, static-y radio transmissions or phone calls of creepy shit. There’s an episode of The Twilight Zone where an old lady keeps getting phone calls with nothing but static on the other end. Soon the static becomes static and breathing. Then it’s static and breathing and a low moan. It drives her nuts and I’m pretty sure she dies of terror over these phone calls that won’t end. Then they show where the phone line was going and it was a downed line going straight into her husband’s grave. Completely nonsensical but it always spooks the shit out of me.
Another one, audio recordings of dead people. Bonus creep points if it’s in another language and near death. I blame System Shock 2 but I could point the finger at Bioshock, Event Horizon, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Evil Dead, and any number of other media involving recordings of dead people. Numbers stations fall under this too. I find something very creepy about radio communications of numbers with no explanation.
There you are, my fears laid out. Missing people, poor sound quality in voice transmissions, dead people on tape.
